2017-05-15 - Local Gardening Program Now Accepting Submissions

Submissions are now being accepted for the City of Charlottetown’s Make Our Hometown Beautiful program, formerly known as Make Charlottetown Bloom.

The gardening program is designed to recognize those who maintain buildings and landscapes within City limits. Businesses and residents can self-nominate or nominate someone else. The deadline for submissions is Monday, July 17.

"We decided to give this program a bit of an overhaul by updating the categories, the name and broadening our focus to include recognition for sustainable practices, environmental stewardship and community engagement," said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. "We see the pride residents take in their properties and recognize all of the work that goes into maintaining that. Now we want to tie this program back into our own sustainability efforts and honour those who are going above and beyond for our community and our environment."

The categories are commercial properties, curb appeal, edible gardens, gardening in small spaces, community engagement, children and youth gardens, birds and the bees, water wise garden and the Mayor’s Award. Each category will be judged on its unique features, variety and color of flowers, design and overall aesthetics. Evidence of environmentally friendly, sustainable practices will also be noted. Entrants are encouraged to include photos or stories to support their submission.

The Mayor’s Award will be presented by Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee to the property owner who demonstrates the best overall improvement to their home or grounds.

Volunteer judges will be judging all entries/properties from July 29 until August 4. The awards will be presented at the Make Our Hometown Beautiful Awards in September.

Anyone interested in being a volunteer judge can contact the City at 902-566-5548.

Submission forms can be picked up at City Hall (199 Queen Street). A digital copy of the entry form and category descriptions are available online at www.charlottetown.ca by clicking on the Make Our Hometown Beautiful button.
