2017-04-06 - Charlottetown to Participate in Poetry City During April Council Meeting

The City of Charlottetown will participate in the Canada-wide Poetry City Challenge during April’s monthly Council meeting on Monday, April 10 to celebrate National Poetry Month.

Poetry City, formally called The Mayor’s Poetry City Challenge, is an annual celebration of poetry facilitated by mayors and city councillors all across Canada. A challenge is distributed to mayors across the country encouraging them to invite a local poet to do a short reading at a city council meeting in March or April. The timing of the challenge is set to align with UNESCO World Poetry Day on March 21, and National Poetry Month in April. Poetry City also encourages municipalities to formally declare World Poetry Day and National Poetry Month as a means of bringing poetry into the public eye.

In Charlottetown, PEI Poet Laureate Deirdre Kessler will read a new poem entitled "Strange roots" at the Council meeting on Monday, April 10 at 7 p.m. The poem is about Robinson's Island on the north shore of PEI It’s also about memory retention and how people remember their past.

"Parliamentary Poet Laureate George Elliott Clarke has challenged Mayors across Canada to bring poetry into politics and we are thrilled to be participating again," said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. "Deirdre Kessler is a beloved local author and we’re pleased she has agreed to join us for our Council meeting to assist us in participating in this national initiative."

Deirdre Kessler is a Prince Edward Island-based author of two dozen books for children and adults. She teaches creative writing, children’s literature, and a course on Lucy Maud Montgomery with the Department of English of the University of Prince Edward Island. Kessler is the Island’s sixth Poet Laureate and has also received the UPEI Award for Teaching Excellence.

"It's wonderful that National Poetry Month will be celebrated again with the Mayor's Poetry City Challenge (Poetry City)," said PEI Poet Laureate Deirdre Kessler.
